Mary Poppins blows into the Prince Edward Theatre

Disney and Cameron Mackintosh's acclaimed stage musical of Mary Poppins has delighted audiences around the world since its world premiere in 2004, and is set to return to the West End at the Prince Edward Theatre in 2019 with tickets going on sale in January 2019. Featuring music and lyrics by the Sherman Brothers, with additional music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, it is based on the much loved children's books by P. L. Travers and the 1964 Disney film of the same name. Julian Fellowes' book blends the original stories with the much loved film to create a new and iconic stage adventure.

The original production was directed by Richard Eyre along with co-direction and choreography by Matthew Bourne and Stephen Mear. The production had an out of town tryout in Bristol before opening in the West End in December 2004 at the Prince Edward Theatre, making it the only Disney musical to premiere in the UK. The original cast featured Laura Michelle Kelly in the role of Mary Poppins for which she went on to win the 2005 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

It returns to the Prince Edward Theatre in autumn 2019 starring West End favourites Zizi Strallen and Charlie Stemp, with tickets on sale early 2019. Sign up to our newsletter to be notified when tickets go on sale.

Mary Poppins the Musical transferred to Broadway, opening at the New Amsterdam Theatre on November 16, 2006. It was nominated for seven Tony Awards including Best Musical, and won the award for Best Scenic Design. The Broadway production closed on 3 March 2013 after 2,619 performances.

The first UK tour of Mary Poppins began on 4 June 2008, running to April 2009. A second UK tour began at the Curve Theatre, Leicester on October 13, 2015, once again directed by Richard Eyre, and currently stars Zizi Strallen as Mary Poppins, and Matt Lee as Bert.

A sequel to the original Mary Poppins film, which premiered in 1964 starring Julie Andrews in the titular role, is set to be released in December 2018. Starring Emily Blunt as the flying nanny and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mary Poppins Returns sees Poppins return to the Banks household following a family tragedy. With a 54 year gap between the original film and this sequel, it is the longest gap between live-action film sequels in history.
