Update on German School Group Travel to the UK

We have now received confirmation from the Home Office that German legislation has been approved and that the scheme will officially go live from 1 August 2026.

The Home Office has advised that the relevant GOV.UK guidance page will be updated to reflect this, and the required application form will also be released on that date.

At this stage, we are awaiting the updated operational guidance and documentation from GOV.UK. Until this is formally published, members should continue to refer to the original announcement details shared previously, noting that final operational arrangements may still be subject to confirmation.

The original published explanatory memorandum stated:

“Following EU Exit, the requirement to travel on a passport and hold a visa (if a visa national) was viewed by Germany as a significant barrier to German school groups visiting the UK. The changes address this concern.”

It further confirmed that the arrangements are intended to allow:

  • Students aged 19 and under studying at recognised German schools or educational institutions to visit the UK without advance permission (ETA or visa) when travelling as part of a school group of five or more

  • EU, EEA and Swiss nationals within these groups to travel using a national identity card rather than a passport

  • A scheme which mirrors the existing arrangement already in place with France and agreed as part of the UK–Germany Friendship and Bilateral Cooperation Treaty

You can view the original Government documents here:

This remains a hugely positive and important development for the youth and educational travel sector, helping to reduce barriers for German school groups visiting the UK and supporting the continued rebuilding of educational travel links between the UK and Europe.

We will share further updates and guidance with members as soon as the revised GOV.UK information is published.

The update about German school group travel to the UK shows how much planning and policy changes can affect educational trips and student experiences. It made me think of a semester when I had multiple assignments and group projects due at the same time, and I felt really overwhelmed trying to manage everything. I used Need accounting course help so I could stay on track with my studies while handling other responsibilities. It reminded me that clear structure and support can make complex situations much easier to handle in both travel planning and academics.
