About the Event

‘All pupils should be enabled to participate in and gain knowledge, skills and understanding associated with the artistic practice of drama. Pupils should be able to adopt, create and sustain a range of roles, responding appropriately to others in role. They should have opportunities to improvise, devise and script drama for one another and a range of audiences, as well as to rehearse, refine, share and respond thoughtfully to drama and theatre performances.’

National Curriculum.

There are two ways of interpreting this paragraph:

  1. It gives no guidance or instruction on how to incorporate drama in key stages 1-2, so can't be as important as STEM subjects. Let's offer it as an extra-curricular activity.
  2. It justifies the embedding of drama and artistic practice throughout the curriculum, both as a subject in it's own right, and as a teaching methodology.

For the past year we have chaired an initiative with the Drama & Theatre Education Alliance on the quality of Drama in primary and key stage 3. We've spoken to many teachers who have successfully embedded drama into their curriculum and seen the positive results: more engaged children, creativity, collaboration with others, improved peer-to-peer relationships, better behaviour...the list goes on!

This workshop is designed to support primary teachers in using more drama in the classroom with practical techniques to use with your students.
