This House Official Workshop

Nica Burns, Caro Newling for Neal Street Productions, Headlong, in association with Jonathan Church Productions, Gavin Kalin Productions and TC Beech Ltd present the National Theatre and Chichester Festival Theatre production of This House.

Is a political revolution coming? Will the Labour party collapse? Can the kingdom stay united?

It's 1974. And Westminster is about to go to war with itself. Set in the engine rooms of the House of Commons, James Graham's This House dives deep into the secret world of the Whips who roll up their sleeves and go to often farcical lengths to influence an unruly chorus of MPs within the Mother of all Parliaments.

In an era of chaos, both hilarious and shocking, fist fights break out in the parliamentary bars, high-stake tricks and games are played, while sick or dying MPs are carried through the lobby to register their crucial votes as the government hangs by a thread.

Premiered to universal acclaim at the National Theatre in 2012, This House written by James Graham (The Vote, Privacy) and directed by Headlong Artistic Director Jeremy Herrin (People, Places and Things, Wolf Hall), gives us a timely, moving and often amusing insight into the workings of British politics.

Educational Workshop:

Designed to attract not only Drama groups, but also students of Politics, History, English Literature and Sociology, with reference to further curriculum subjects of PSHE and Citizenship.

Debate, coercion, bribery, manipulation, diplomacy, principals, ethics and morals, politics uses many techniques to get the job done! This workshop will use drama games, group and solo exercises to explore the central subjects, themes and characters within the production, including scene studies and performances at the end of the workshop.

This workshop will aim to enable students to explore issues addressed in the play through drama techniques, teaching performance skills and engaging students in debate on the themes. Techniques may include improvisation, character development techniques and scene studies.

Teambuilding Workshops

Designed to address key public speaking skills used for business and politics, this workshop explores speeches and key scenes in the play to teach participants how to work with an audience, to convey their thoughts and emotions with confidence and clarity, and to tell their story and that of their vision in an engaging and moving way.

This workshop is ideal for student and adult group alike.
