1984 Official Workshop
The unforgettable theatrical phenomenon returns to London following an acclaimed international tour.
The five-star smash hit production of Orwell’s dystopian masterpiece, 1984, is back in London from 14th June. Now seen by over a quarter of a million people, theatre’s most powerful event returns to London for a limited season. Don’t miss out!
April, 1984. 13:00. Comrade 6079, Winston Smith, thinks a thought, starts a diary, and falls in love. But Big Brother is always watching.
Orwell’s ideas have become our ideas; his fiction is often said to be our reality. The “definitive book of the 20th century” (The Guardian) is re-examined in this radical and much lauded staging exploring surveillance, identity and why Orwell’s vision of the future is as relevant now as ever.
This workshop, exclusivly delivered by Theatre Workout, has been created in partnership with Headlong Theatre, to explore the world of 1984 as presented by Headlong Theatre in this stunning production.
Students will work with improvisation, games and other exercises designed to place students in the position of Comrade 6079 Winston Smith, challenging them to act as necessary to comply with and avoid upsetting Big Brother.
Groups may explore the perception of reality, rules, double speak, double think, thought crime, newspeak, and power, challenging students to comply, think, unthank, respond, un-respond, speak and newspeak their way through the workshop.
Students will be expected to develop their own characters, language, challenge their own (and each other’s) thought process and behaviour. They will collectively and individually be expected to play the role of Winston, O’Brien, Big Brother, the Party and Goldstein intermittently though the workshop.
